Avatar Social Network for Second Life Residents

Avatar Social Network for Second Life Residents

Avatar Social Network is a network that caters to virtual world avatars. It’s been around for quite a few years now. I first created my account there in 2013 and then I blogged about it in 2014. Recently I’ve noticed the site has had a bit of an upgrade and running quite smoothly so I thought it would be a good time to promote it once again. Also, a few of my friends lost their facebook account again because of their terms of service so I thought this would be a good alternative for those looking to socialize with other virtual world residents.

It’s very easy to sign up and it even has an android app for those of you who prefer to do your social media on your phones. (UPDATE: sorry but it’s not currently working, read comments below for details.)

If you decide to join, don’t forget to add me: http://www.avatarsocialnetwork.com/profile/strawberrysingh

I did a quick video talking about the network and giving a bit of a tour of the site:

If you haven’t guessed yet, I’m a social media addict. You can check the other networks I’m a part of on my Social Media Page. However here are some of the networks I’m most active on:

I also did a very detailed Social Media post back in 2013 that you may find informative: Secrets to Social Networks for Second Lifers

Which social networks are you most active on?

Strawberry

Strawberry has been a Second Life Resident since 2007 and a Linden Lab employee since 2019.

android app says not available in USA yet. ???

  • Christine, strange, I don’t see that anywhere on the page. I just hit the install button on it again and it’s letting me install and I’m in the USA.

maybe a hiccup then I will try again

I kept thinking this was AVMatch but it isn’t.

I could care less about Facebook now. Too one dimensional. When I completed Mafia Wars I left.

It’s much more interesting and educational to design on SL and do photography on Flickr.

Hi there! I signed up on ASN today after seeing this post and the video that accompanied it. Thankfully a friend pointed out a very curious clause in the ASN TOS:

“by posting, uploading, inputting, providing or submitting your Submission you are granting Provider, our affiliated companies and necessary sublicensees permission to use your Submission in connection with the operation of their Internet businesses including, without limitation, the rights to: copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, translate and reformat your Submission; and to publish your name in connection with your Submission.”

Basically, any content you post there becomes their property that they can use without your permission. I suppose for a regular person who just wants connect with their friends, follow their favorite bloggers, and post the occasional pic it’s not a big deal, but for anyone who is posting more professional content (someone like Strawberry, for example) it might become an issue. Just thought I’d share it here since I myself completely overlooked the TOS and wouldn’t have known if it wasn’t shown to me.

Ditto. I looked at their terms of service and decided to pass.

  • I’m getting a similar message when I attempt to download the Android client (i.e. not available in your country). I’d love to have a really active social network for my SL-self, but I’m such a slave to my mobile. Could it be the app is just soft launched? In that case, maybe we’ll see it more widely available here in the states later this week?

  • My name is Arkad Baxton, founder of Avatar Social Network.

First of all I would like to thank Strawberry the lovely video she made and publishing it.

Secondly I wish to address the two concerns raised here.

    1. Our Android app. It is temporarily taken down from public access. Those that already have it and installed it can install it again, however new access is not available right now. Google has recently changed a few things that our app has to follow to work properly and we have not made those changes yet. Once it is done the app will be available again. Meanwhile ASN has a mobile friendly version both for smartphones and tablets that looks and works pretty much the same as the app itself – I use it daily. By simply visiting the website it recognises the type of the device and loads accordingly.

    2. TOS. Of course upon sign up it is required to be read and accepted, without that, signing up is not possible. The quote posted by Teruumi Simoneaux above does not in any way mean that posted content by members become the property of the website provider. It does not say that anywhere. What it means is basically states that the content posted on the website may for example appear in PR products as you can clearly see that in Strawberry’s work above. Members’ names, posts do appear in that video and by accepting our TOS those members gave their consent to such. If you continue reading our TOS just a little longer you can see that content of ownership is NOT whatsoever being taken away from it’s rightful owner: “By posting, uploading, inputting, providing or submitting your Submission you warrant and represent that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to your Submission as described in this section including, without limitation, all the rights necessary for you to provide, post, upload, input or submit the Submissions.”

If you have any further legal or technical questions about the website, without signing up you can contact our Help Center directly from the main page.

Once again, Thank you Strawberry for the lovely work and welcome everyone who decides to join Avatar Social Network! 🙂

  • Thank you Arkad for all the info, oops I didn’t realize the android app was only working for me because I’ve installed it before. Hope you can get it back in the play store soon!

  • Arkad,

Could you all use testers for the mobile app? Maybe make it available as an APK file? My local Android guru taught me to “sideload” APKs and I’d be happy to help with the testing. I have recently started using ASN and am really enjoying having an avi-friendly social network space!
