What is your perception of Second Life? Challenge
This week’s Monday Meme suggestion comes once again from the multi talented Mr. Draxtor Despres. A few days ago he put out a video of Loki Eliot sharing what his perception of SL is, you can view that on Draxtor’s youtube channel. He then suggested I ask my blog readers to also share their perception of Second Life.
Meme instructions: Make a one minute video at your favorite Second Life location and/or answer the following questions and share what your perception is of Second Life. If you do a video, upload it to youtube or flickr. If you upload it to flickr, please add it to the Blog Memes Flickr Group and don’t forget to leave a link to your post in the comments.
I’m no Draxtor Despres and my video skills are severely lacking but for my video I went to my most favorite place in Second Life, the Kingdom of Sand sim. I filmed there with one of my most favorite songs playing in the background: ‘A Thousand Years’ by The Piano Guys so this is my perception.

- What is your perception of Second Life? – Second Life is an adventurous place that lets me explore and discover things I wouldn’t get a chance to in the real world that easily. When I look around I am amazed by the talent of the content creators, who are people just like me, that are at their computers creating these things for all of the residents to enjoy.
- Do you feel the portrayal or reputation Second Life seems to have in the mainstream media is justified? – I feel that in the past, Second Life got a lot of slack in the media because of preconceived notions that it is just used for adult activities. However, I think in recent times that perception may be slightly changing. With a new CEO at Linden Lab and lots of updates and changes to the grid, there has been more positive light shed on it. Articles like: There’s No Shame In Playing Second Life By Beau Hindman show the outside world that there is more to do in SL than they might assume. My activities in Second Life, for the majority of the time, include exploring sims for my Friday Finds, dressing up my avatar, taking loads of images of myself and other avatars as well as assisting the content creators that I work for. So much to do in Second Life, I never have a moment when I ever feel bored or that I’m wasting my time. I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve met here and just by exploring and discovering things on my own.
- Do you talk about your Second Life with your real life friends and family? – There are a few people that I completely trust in my real life that know about my Second Life and some of the things I do here. I come from a somewhat strict household and it’s not that I am ashamed of my Second Life, but it gives me the opportunity to live a life the way I want to without societal pressures or judgement. This is why, for the most part, my Second Life is a secret. Also because of what I do in the real world as a career, I prefer to keep my activities in Second Life to myself. This is my own little place that I can escape to and be myself without judgement, and I want to keep it that way!
- What is your most favorite thing to do in Second Life? – Probably going to sound completely vain here but I would be kidding myself if I didn’t fully admit that my most favorite thing is dressing up my avatar. I mean….just look at that face. So much fun!
Please remember that you can participate in any of the memes/challenges at any time. You’ll find them all under my Blog Challenges category along with other memes and challenges I’ve done over the years. You don’t have to have a blog to do this challenge, you can share your images/words/videos on any social platform.
Update: How to make a video in Second Life? I use Camtasia. Some other video capturing softwares that I know of: CamStudio, FRAPS, Jing, Snagit, and if you know of any other good ones that are free and easy to use, please share the links in the comments so others can try them out. Thank you.

The side that I like very much of second life is meeting nice, fun and creative people from all over the world who enjoy building a beautiful magical universe. Sharing photography, music, video, and company with people there is very fun.
The truth is that if I search for second life in Internet, I don’t like most of things that I can find there. That’s why I prefer to keep apart my real identity. But there are wonderful and beautiful things there, that I’ve shared with my closer family and friends, as well I showed them the videos that I made.https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/16552830568/
I think that SL must be shown in a better way to the world.
Journalists come into Second Life like noobs and start writing after only one week in-world experience. LMAO

Hi Strawberry! I too am making my video debut on your blog. Not even sure I know the best way to post to it. I’ll post on my web http://aairsl.blogspot.com/?view=magazine and also the YouTube at https://youtu.be/_0a43X9xATc. bit by bit and a little at a time, my social media is expanding. Your an inspiration Berry! Thank you.
What is your perception of Second Life? – A place to make dreams take shape and view the dreams of others. It’s not RL but it is as close as we can get right now. Dreams found and follow in SL don’t become distant faded memories, the taste is always fresh.
I never call SL a game because I don’t play it I live it. Our brains can operate on many levels and the lucky ones can still dream.
What SL also does that many overlook is it provides a place for those without legs, to dance. Those short of breath to run. Those limited by sickness or physical restrictions to fly. In the next couple of months the 1st anniversary of a friends parting is noted. I never knew how ill she was, the greif was and is real. We never know what haunts those we deal with so be kind.
Do you feel the portrayal or reputation Second Life seems to have in the mainstream media is justified? – I would hazard a guess that at least 95% of the cub reporters in the mainstream media that registrar in SL and after a week or month decide that they are authorities and attempt to tell their readers about SL can’t. Few if any have ever spent the time required to know our “planet” SL. It is somewhat like trying to tell about life on the moon when you only have ever flown in a plane. You need to live it to know it and if you can’t spend at the minimum 1 year in SL (about 2 hours a week average) you just don’t know it. If for example they used Dax’s youtube clips it would be a different story, but then it would not be theirs.
Do you talk about your Second Life with your real life friends and family? – Well sharing my SL is something that I was keen at doing when I started. I tried to get friends interested but few took the plunge and none remained. I gave up because, as in the answer to the previous question, one can’t explain SL you have to live it. There is a special breed of people that remain in SL for 2 or more years be it companionship, to dream, to create, to design they are committed to achieve.
What is your most favorite thing to do in Second Life? – Nothing vain about playing dress up, in RL the greatest invention ever was the mirror (womans prespective). I love my av but she is demanding and expensive, lol. Wander the wonders of SL and fly (with or without plane), and dance and dance and dance.
