Second Life Made Me Learn Challenge!

Second Life Made Me Learn Challenge

This week’s Monday Meme is brought to you again by Mr. Draxtor Despres. He was having a conversation on twitter with a friend who stated that Second Life pushed him into learning 3D modelling. Draxtor then tagged me and suggested this as a meme, “things Second Life has made people do (or learn)” and since I myself have learned quite a few things because of SL, I figured this should definitely be my next Monday Meme!

Meme instructions: Share things that you have learned because of your involvement in Second Life, either personally or professionally. Don’t forget to leave a link to your post in the comments so others can come by and read your answers as well!

  • Photoshop – I had never owned nor tried Adobe Photoshop before I got into Second Life Photography. Now I have it open pretty much the entire day. I’ve never taken any classes but I have watched hundreds of Photoshop tutorials on youtube over the years.
  • WordPress – The only blogging I had ever done before I got into Second Life blogging was on the blogspot/blogger platform. I was not familiar with wordpress at all but now that I’ve owned my own domain and been managing a self-hosted wordpress blog for 5 years now, I feel like I’m pretty comfortable with it. I wouldn’t say I’m an expert and going to be coding and designing my own themes now, but I can use it well enough that if I mess it up in some way, I manage to figure it out eventually and fix it on my own as well.
  • Budgeting and curbing my shopaholicism – I will be the first to admit that I am still a big shopper, but before Second Life, my addiction was a bit insane in real life. I was never really disciplined about money and living at home, I never had any real world expenses of my own other than just clothing and things I wanted for myself. When I joined Second Life, I made a conscious decision never to put money into the game, but earn a living here myself. So I started out getting a job, which turned into several jobs and photography and running my blog here. Working and earning my money here made me learn to put myself on a budget and actually save up for whatever new item I had my eye on. Now that I’ve been blogging all these years and I earn more in SL, the saving up and budgeting has become a bit easier, but I still try to maintain a certain level of restraint on my spending habits, in both lives.
  • Customer Service – I have never worked in retail in the real world so after managing a store in Second Life, I’ve realized that people can be very entitled and difficult to deal with. That also made me reexamine myself in situations where I was the customer and instead of getting frustrated and taking my frustrations out on the csr or designer, I treat them with the courtesy and respect that I would want in return. It’s a very delicate and tricky situation to be in, especially since I am representing someone else’s brand and I don’t want to do anything that would reflect negatively on their brand because of me. It takes a lot of patience and a certain level of courtesy to do a customer service job and I have serious respect for those that do it well in both lives.
  • Growing a thicker skin – In the real world, when you share something about yourself and someone has a reaction or an opinion about it, they tend to share their opinions in a somewhat respectable manner since their real names and faces are attached to that opinion. But in the online world, people can hide behind a computer in the safety of their homes and say whatever their evil little heart desires without feeling the repercussions (like my fist in their face) if they had said the same thing in the real world. So I’ve learned that not everyone will like you and will have issues with you and will voice those issues as often as they can. That used to bother me before, now…not so much.

So those are some of the professional and personal things I’ve learned because of Second Life. I hope you can share some of the things that you have learned as well.

Please remember that you can participate in any of the memes/challenges at any time. You’ll find them all under my Blog Challenges category along with other memes and challenges I’ve done over the years. You don’t have to have a blog to do this challenge, you can share your answer in the comments below or on any social platform.

Second Life Made Me Learn Challenge

Uber starts on the 25th of each month and this Wednesday it will open with one of my most favorite themes, boho! I am so looking forward to this! Keep an eye on the Uber blog and flickr group for a sneak look at what’s to come.

LeLutka is about to have another beautiful hair release. Two new styles will be available on Wednesday, February 25th. I’m wearing the Honor hair in a brown tone. About a week ago Lelutka had a major update to all of their hair textures. Now there are new color packs available in HUDs. Each new pack has base colors, which then have their own unique to that color fade option. Then a roots base option, with the same fades with roots option, so for an 8 color pack you get 32 looks. Confused yet? Here is a picture of the brown HUD to give you an idea. If you are like me and prefer to change your hair color often, but don’t want to get the fatpack, the Range pack will be the one to look at because you get 15 different colors. Click here to see an image of the Range pack. I am loving this new update and I appreciate the fact that the use of the HUD means less clutter in my inventory.

You’ll notice I am wearing the Maitreya body and feet in this image. The sandals are also from Maitreya but were released a while back. Onyx has now updated these sandals to fit the mesh body.  Along with these sandals, she has also updated many of her other older shoes and jeans to fit. You can take a look at her flickr to see some of the items. If you have purchased any of these items in the past, you can hit the redelivery terminal at the Maitreya mainstore for a free update.

    That first picture is stunning!

  • Croon

Thank you for posting a picture of the Lelutka Range pack! I wear lots of different colors so this was very exciting to see!

This meme hits kind of near and dear to me, and while I don’t plan at the moment to fill it out (I’m shy!), it’s definitely made me look back over the personal and often positive changes I’ve had during my SLife.

    1. Although a person confined to a wheelchair in real-life can walk, dance and run in SL, people suffering from personality disturbances will bring their mental health issues with them onto the platform too.

2.”i don’t mix SL with RL” = pure crap. People get angry, delete friends, argue and care, no matter what else they claim.

3.That guy you liked sooo much and thought was better than the rest? Not so much. He will still stomp your heart as soon as some other little pixelated doll comes along and throws herself at him.
It’s okay, because they will be done in about a month anyway .

4.If it “tipes lik ths lol” – it’s underage.

5.If it has BLING ON, it’s a noob, whatever SL age.

6.Hot person in 1st life tab? PRINT SCREEN, paste into your photo editing software, crop, save, drop into Google Image, search. Find out where they stole the picture from.

  • Well…I’ve learned Croon is an AWESOME person! (well she is, so there! Hi Croon! 😀 )

I’ve learned Second Life can be a pretty fluid place…people come and go. If you’re in SL for any length of time, you won’t feel the same as when you started. Those aren’t necessarily bad things.

I’ve learned a lot about SL photography just from your blog! ‘Tis true. Not that I think I’m a particularly fantastic photographer, but I really do enjoy it! I knew nothing about windlight, hi res snap shot, or mirror water before I found your thank you Miss Berry 😀
Subsequently, my affinity led me to learn how to make poses and now I co-own a pose store…which funds my shopping! (hehe yeah…I um…haven’t quite curbed my shopping!)

  • I may have to start a personal blog to go along with the Review blog just for things like this 🙂

Image editing – I am still /terrible/ at it but the last few months I’ve begun doing more of it – mostly adding text but playing with Gimp a little, too. I never would have tried it except for Second Life.

Making your work public can be amazing. – This one is blog-specific but knowing I have something I am qualified and passionate to talk about has changed my outlook on so much. I am trying to fill a niche that’s currently…. really empty. Which is terrifying and might normally scare me off, except that this time I feel like there are people who really are hungry for what I am trying to provide and that is humbling and exciting.

Roleplay – Second Life and Roleplay are tied together for me. I played with it a little, set it down and came back one day only to get contact details for one friend I’d met before closing the door forever. She randomly introduced me to Second Life Roleplay and I never left. I’ve learned how to tell amazing stories, lead, live in my characters and speak up for what I feel to people in Second Life…. And I took that lesson to the real world to try tabletop RPGs and have established a fantastic group of RL friends I never would have met, if it hadn’t been for my experiences in Second Life Roleplay. Roleplaying is a skill, but it has yielded so much more for me personally 🙂

@ Strawberry & Skell …. absolutely spot on. Second Life has also brought some learning about negatives. Because of Second Life I have learned…

How to Deal – with ugliness, with saying ‘no’, with people attacking me… with having to let go of destructive people, even when I love them. All within our wonderful world of Second Life. It is a training ground that puts you up against anybody and everybody. I used to crumble when someone yelled at me or if someone didn’t like me. While it’s taken lot of tears to get here…. I’ve learned I can go through some pretty awful crap that, before Second Life, I’d never have thought up. I believe fewer crazy stories and guard heart and friends a little more fiercely – but at the end of the day it’s a good thing.

Ain’t Got Time for That – …. that just because someone is breathing, it does not mean they deserve time and energy. Sometimes people are crappy and it is good and healthy to say, “I don’t have time for that in my life.” And walk away with a smile.

Thanks, Second Life. And thanks Strawberry and Mr. Draxtor Despres for the thought-provoking challenge this week 🙂

  • LOL Aylin your response made me laugh out loud at how true all of them are – number 3 especially (number 6 I already do)!

There’re lots of things i’ve learnt in SL….
~ Building : i have some friends who are creators, 3D modelers, cloth and avatar creators. When i was in the sandbox with them, they made me interested what they were they doing. I wanted to create something, but i dont have art skill. I’d started with making furniture with normal prim, but it’s old fashion. Was Thinking of something moderate…. finally i have a small posing animation’ brand, *StoryTeller*.

~ Edit pictures : It’s not anything special. I, personally, don’t like to make something more processes. Lots of my picture in Flickr are taken without editing. Just do with some pics. Or to add some real, some sl in the same pic.

~ Marketing : SL makes me find more about online marketing. When seeing big brand in SL, i always find how they are success, or what they did for their brands, and which i could do with my brand.

~ Friends : ‘You have your own way to do in your own life, but we still are friend. If you have time, please online, we are here.’, say to the close friend who has to go. No matter how we know, or who they are in rl, we are friends. Someone leaves forever. Someone come back. Thinking the old days when meet friends login in the same time, like old people. 😀

Acually they might have many other things i learn from SL, but i forgot.

Second Life has taught me who people are. When I first came into SL I had just left christianity after forty years in it. What a learning curve! Taught me so much about myself and everyone else. Nothing quite like a place with no consequences to show you a person’s true colours.

What has SL forced me to learn,, SL itself is a huge learning curve when you first come inworld, as we all remember. Learning to walk, learning to dress, learning to make a standard avi a representation of you.

Textures – I’ve always been interested in graphics and 3D design and SL has made me hone these skills. When I first started in SL I could barely cut and paste from a picture using GIMP. Now I’m confident in both GIMP and Photoshop and can work in most of the adobe suite.

Building – When I was first inworld I was amazed at the building option. I’d never had the use of a 3D modeling program before and I took to it like a duck to water. We all know that it’s pretty basic but even so with the inworld sculpting and new mesh tools you can do some amazing things with it, just look around you. I’ve tried to use Blender but the interface is awkward, complicated and frustrating for me

Sequencing – Animation sequencing is something I started a few years back when I started to perform in SL I’m no musician and I have great respect for the ones I do know. What I did do was to start dancing professionally in SL and the most important part of SL dancing is the ability to Sequence animations with other animations and the tempo of a chosen piece of music. I’ve been told that I’m pretty good at it now 🙂

Scripting – The dancing lead me into scripting. while I’m no master scripter I can sort of read a script if I know what I’m looking for and I’ve even written a few simple scripts. Mostly though I use scripting to produce particles that I use in my acts.

Writing – Before I got into SL the most writing i had done in the previous 20 odd years was filling out forms for a local government department that I worked for. Using SL as an interface with people has made me increase my literacy skills immensely If i was to resit my year ten exams again I’m pretty sure I’d do a lot better now than I did then. Examiners sort of frown on answers that are shorter than the questions in major exams 🙂

    Second Life made me learn….
A cheerful attitude really is contagious! It is harder to do in RL, but I do try harder every day to be positive.
It can be extremely sad when I lose a friend I have only met in pixelated form…so sad I cried for days, and after two years I still feel the loss.
I have learned so much about history as well, and on a level I had never experienced before. I have researched fashion, music and entertainment, and the day to day life of people in several periods so my roleplay would be spot on.
Typos aren’t really all that big a deal!!
The one thing it has made me want to learn but I haven’t yet is how to develop mute and block buttons in RL. I’m still working on those projects.

I am like a week late, but, still. I have been in SL for 8+ years. So 8 things that I have learned (not in any order).
#1: Time zones: They are pain but also make me feel like a time traveler.
    #2: Software: Photoshop, 3DS Max
#3: Business: Basics of small business management
#4: Vocabulary: My English vocab has improved a lot. Not to forget, I make less grammatical errors.
#5: Patience: Working in land business for 4+ years and dealing with new residents has taught me patience.
#6: Culture of other countries: Enough said!
#7: Feelings: SL or RL, we can have two lives, but feelings are one.
#8: Small world: Yeah, SL is small world too! You never know who you end up meeting and when.

  • I’ve been in Sl for 6 years now. I’ve grown a thicker skin and learned to beleive in my music again! The wonderfully supportive music community in SL single handedly convinced me my music had enough value to make a CD. I’m close to completing in thanks to the generous donations of music supporters in secondlife. I am about to enbarq on a campaign to complete it and start my next project.

I learned a lot about marketing and endorcements. BAX boots was my first endorcement deal as an artist and I still love and wear her work!

I’ve learned to be a better communicator, to be less reactionary and more patient with misscommunication. Communicating via text quite often your feeling about yourself can be projected into the conversation. Give people the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks to a period of greivers I learned that sometimes people do things for their own reasons and it generally has NOTHING at all to do with you.

Overall I have loved my SL expereince. I have learned a lot about myself and i’m a better person for it!

I have learned (and still I am learning) how to edit a video in second live. I haven’t ever done anything “creative” before. One of my friends in second live taught to me everything I needed to start making videos (machinima) I am enjoying a lot doing it and sharing with friends .
This is the latest one, which I uploaded some days ago 🙂 I hope you enjoy watching it .

  • Hi Raj,This is a beautiful bread. The texture of the bread is just perfect and looks so moist. I would love the flavor of the bread. Thank you so much for sharing with Full Plate Thursday and hope to see you next week! Have a wonderful week end!
