20 Personal SL Questions Meme
Have you ever been in a social setting (like a club, party, etc…) where you meet someone new and start up a conversation and then have them spew 20 questions at you one after another without hesitation? I often get very uneasy in those types of situations because I am a somewhat private person, in both lives, and don’t feel comfortable sharing where I’m from, my real name, my whole life story, etc… the first time I meet someone. Besides, it gets a little boring answering the same ASL type questions over and over.
So I thought I would ask you a new, fresh set of questions about your Second Lives that are still personal and will help you to get to know someone, but might be a bit more thought-provoking. I didn’t come up with these questions though. I asked a friend to help me out, he chooses to stay anonymous, but he did provide almost all of the questions listed below. Thank you for your help! <3
Meme instructions: Answer the following 20 personal questions about your Second Life. Don’t forget to share a link to your post in the comments!
- When and how did you discover Second Life? – I discovered it in May 2007 through a friend.
- Did you know about virtual worlds before or was this your first experience with them? – No, I didn’t really. I was never a gamer. The only game I had played was SIMS so I assumed it was similar to that, which it is in a way, but the social aspect was completely surprising to me.
- Has Second Life met your expectations? – I’m not sure I had many expectations when I first joined, but I know that my Second Life has been quite fulfilling.
- If you could teleport back to the first ten minutes of your avatar’s slife, what would you tell yourself? – Start again and this time pick a better name!
- How long did it take you to master avatar flying and driving vehicles inworld? – Flying I think it took me quite a while because I would just run into buildings and get stuck and I am still trying to master driving vehicles, lol! I mostly stick to walking and running.
- Do you have a mystery alt? – I don’t. My close friends know pretty much all of my alts and most of my alts have “this is Strawberry Singh’s alt” written in their profile, lol.
- Is your SL avatar a reflection of you, or someone you wished you could be? – Personality wise, she is just me. I am not a roleplayer where I take on a different persona when I login. Berry is who I am. However as for looks, Berry is a lot prettier and curvier than the real me so yes, in that aspect, I wish I could be her.
- Is there an individual you met in SL that inspired you in your RL? How? – There is someone that made me realize that I need to become more independent and build up my confidence. So now, I am working on achieving that. I don’t wish to share the person’s name.
- Do you feel it is easier to create stronger bonds/relationships with people you meet inworld as opposed to the real world? – I think it is the same actually, in a lot of ways. In the real world there is an advantage where you can actually see/touch the person. However, it’s also very easy to get to know someone while just chatting with them via IM, without having other real world distractions getting in the way. So even though I am quite anti-social in Second Life these days, it’s the relationships/friendships/bonds that I created here at the start of my SLife that have kept me here this long.
- Did you ever imagine or believe people could fall in love with someone they never met before Second Life? – Yeah, it’s been happening for years. People fall in love with pen pals or others they may have communicated with online, just not in Second Life. I don’t believe that people only fall in love with someone because of their physical appearance alone, but instead, their personalities, thoughts, beliefs and more. People fall in love because there is a connection, those kinds of connections can be made in many different ways.
- How has your perspective of dating changed (or not) since you started playing second life? – At the moment I don’t really have many positive feelings about dating, in either life, so I’m going to just skip this question.
- How has your perspective of employment changed (or not) since you started playing second life? – Never did I imagine that people could make a living creating virtual items in a virtual world. But they do and it’s made me realize that employment doesn’t mean an office job you go to every day from 9 to 5 or the career you chose to study for in college. I feel in the future we will see more career opportunities through virtual reality in some form.
- Name three things in both your lives that overlap each other significantly. – Hmmmm, this is a hard one for me since I don’t really make a living here but I guess I can say friendships, creative inspiration and socialization.
- If you could live your life more immersively in a virtual world, would you? (Kind of like the Matrix) – No, I prefer to keep it as just a part-time hobby. The thought of becoming too immersive creeps me out a bit.
- How do you think behavior changes for people if they’re inworld vs in real world? Why do you think that is? – People are a lot ruder in the virtual world because they can hide behind the veil of anonymity and not suffer many repercussions for their obnoxious behavior.
- How has second life consumerism changed your perception of spending habits, the value of money, the need to be “bleeding edge” with fashion? – Before Second Life, I was really careless with money and had a very bad shopping habit. Joining Second Life and not investing money into it, working different jobs and earning my way from nothing taught me better money management skills.
- Do you think virtual worlds like SL drive and redefine human interaction or do they narrow and limit it? – I think they do drive it and as our world becomes more technically advanced I can see it redefining human interaction in many ways, which is somewhat terrifying to me at the same time.
- If technology progressed tomorrow to allow you to send emotions to people the way you’d send text or voice messages, would it enrich your SL experience or infringe on it? – I think it would take me time to adjust to it. At first I would be creeped out but I guess as time goes by and it becomes the norm, it would be easier to handle. I can see it enriching the experience for many, especially those that are in deeply connected relationships.
- Name three skills you attribute to having learned or honed in second life alone. – Money management, Photoshop, and networking.
- If your grand kids googled your Second Life Avatar’s name, would they be intrigued, disgusted, proud or something else? – Oh god, I hope that never happens! I don’t think they would be disgusted or proud. I imagine they might point and laugh at me.
So now we have 20 new, more thought-provoking and perhaps a bit confusing questions to ask people when we try and socialize inworld. I hope you guys are able to participate and answer these.

Thanks for sharing strawberry. I have become a fan of your work and blog. I think you are one of the most generous people in SL considering the wisdom sharing and it makes you special. Wish we have met before and became friends because im also an old sl citizen and i know how it feels when people want to come closer when we are already known, we dont trust that much. But anyway, very nice post :))
1) it was an episode of CSI NY in 2007 when I first saw SL
2) Wasn’t much of a gamer, so never really heard of anything like this before
3) I really didn’t have any expectations, though I might say it was more than I expected at least at first
4) Buy a better computer!
5) Flying, moving, pretty easy. Vehicles still next to impossible to master in SL (gotta love them sim crosses!)
6) No not really. I have a girl I made when I was trying to make clothes early on, and use her sometimes for a model stand in. I also made a very round, fat, balding African American old dude I used for some RP, a very humorous role, named Fat Froggy
7) Mostly, just me. Even when I used to RP combat stuff, was just me. Minus the youthful appearance, tall, muscular build, ripped abs, it’s just me!
8) No, not really
9) For me, yes. I really prefer being alone in RL, too many people around just annoys me. So I guess SL is an outlet for me.
10) One day, someone will write doctoral thesis on SL and relationships, that’s all I will say about that!

15) Yes, most people are different, IMO. For one, we can “hide” behind the anonymity, and also, we are almost hot, young and good looking in SL, that tends to change the way you behave, or at the least, aren’t limited by self confidence issues as you may be in RL
16) I did the whole rent/house/lad thing at first, but, it does seem rather waste. I’d rather make money. And I loath shopping in RL, so shopping in SL doesn’t do that much for me either, even though, I make sure I have enough ‘current’ clothes so I don’t look like a perma-noob
17) I think it can go both ways. I think we all know someone who has become so addicted to SL it hurt their family life, but for others that might have limited physical contact in the RL, it can be helpful
18) I will go on record here. I HATE VOICE. I LOATHE VOICE. Even in a business role, I do not want to talk to you
19) Being a SL ‘photographer’ one would be of course, expanding my knowledge of Photoshop, the second would be re-learning photo composition, but mostly, working with and photographing people, and weddings, something I really would not want to do in RL
20) Right now, I am pretty PG, even though my Flickr account for my photography does contain a few R rated images. But overall, I think, people who have never been in SL will never get SL, and will think it is just a silly game and a waste of time

wow! That’s a long Meme, so I left my response over on my blogspot. I also want to say Berry I learn so much from you, with your tutorials and your challenging meme’s. It’s wonderful! Hope no one falls asleep answering the 20 Questions.
When and how did you discover Second Life? – I first heard about it on a news report sometime in 2007. While recuperating from a leg injury that same summer, another report came on about it so I tried logging in – being that I was BORED out of my mind at home and needed something other to do than lay on the couch for hours watching daytime TV.
Did you know about virtual worlds before or was this your first experience with them? – Not at all. I had never even gamed before.
Has Second Life met your expectations? – Far exceeded them based on my experiences in the first few weeks of becoming a member.
If you could teleport back to the first ten minutes of your avatar’s slife, what would you tell yourself? – Spend more time on Help Island! I just flew off and had NO clue what I was doing for weeks.
How long did it take you to master avatar flying and driving vehicles inworld? – Both, ages lol. I’m still a crap driver of all vehicles.
Do you have a mystery alt? – I have several alts, but all of my friends know them and if not, I make it very obvious who I am by the way their profiles are written or, by my behavior. Or just flat out saying who I am.
Is your SL avatar a reflection of you, or someone you wished you could be? – She’s me completely. Now anyway. I did try roleplay of various types when I first arrived but it never felt like a comfortable fit for me. Physically, she’s an idealized version of myself.
Is there an individual you met in SL that inspired you in your RL? How? – Actually it was a group, The Forum Cartel, and more specifically the friends I met in that group, many of whom I still hang out with, or see periodically. A few, crossed into RL friendships.
Do you feel it is easier to create stronger bonds/relationships with people you meet inworld as opposed to the real world? – I’m a lot more social in SL than RL. I don’t know if the bonds are stronger, but the ability to meet a more diverse group of people, has been enjoyable and beneficial to me.
Did you ever imagine or believe people could fall in love with someone they never met before Second Life? – I had no idea this was a possibility when I first joined, but soon found out that as in RL, once you start getting to know people, and exchanging feelings, it felt like a natural progression of the way to form a relationship to me.
How has your perspective of dating changed (or not) since you started playing second life? – Well, I don’t date any longer as I did meet my partner in SL and, we’ve been together for over 5 years now in the real world. But having said that, I guess that would mean I personally have a good view of the possibilities of meeting this way.
I know several couples who began in SL together and are now married/living together very happily.
How has your perspective of employment changed (or not) since you started playing second life? – I had no idea anyone made money there for the longest time! My first days were spent getting lost in totally empty shopping areas. I thought they were all there just for looks lol. Since then, obviously I’ve gotten to know many people who make decent wages from their creations, including my partner at some points in time.
Name three things in both your lives that overlap each other significantly. – Photography, music, home design/architecture.
If you could live your life more immersively in a virtual world, would you? (Kind of like the Matrix) – No. I still will take my first life, over my second.
How do you think behavior changes for people if they’re inworld vs in real world? Why do you think that is? – I have found there is a high incidence of bullying and general obnoxiousness in SL at times. It took me a while to be able to let that stuff roll off my back. I had never encountered this in the real world, so was totally off-put why anyone would want to do this to another.
How has second life consumerism changed your perception of spending habits, the value of money, the need to be “bleeding edge” with fashion? – I love being able to support creators of all types in SL; I’m an avid consumer of products of all types. I’m way more fashion forward there than in RL – in fact, the total opposite lol.
Do you think virtual worlds like SL drive and redefine human interaction or do they narrow and limit it? – I think it can work both ways, depending on the person. For some, it expands their experiences, for others, limits it. But overall I think living virtually is more positive.
If technology progressed tomorrow to allow you to send emotions to people the way you’d send text or voice messages, woult enrich your SL experience or infringe on it? – I’m not much for going beyond typing what I need to get across to others. But, that’s me. I know for some it would be extremely helpful. It just makes me uncomfortable.
Name three skills you attribute to having learned or honed in second life alone. – It’s helped my photography, made me more social than normal, and a bit more tech oriented.

1. It was back in 2007 when I first discovered SL but I didn’t actually play SL fully until early 2009. I can’t remember how I actually first discovered SL anymore.
2. No I’d never really looked at anything like SL before joining and hadn’t heard of Virtual Worlds until.
3. I don’t really have any specific expectations for SL, I just take each day as it is and have fun!
4. Stick it out, this game will surprise you in the best ways.
5. I don’t really fly all that much so can’t say if I’ve mastered it or not as for driving I’ve never tried so not mastered that lol.
6. No mystery alts, I have a couple of alts and will tell about them if asked but I don’t share the info with people I barely know, I don’t see how they’d need to know lol.
7. Personality wise yes, I don’t try to be fake or anything so when you meet me, you get to know me. Moods and all lol.
8. I can’t say I’ve met anyone that really inspired my RL.
9. It’s the same really for me, I can be a loner by nature so I tend to not make friends so easily in any worlds.
10. Yes I completely believe this could happen as it has happened for me lol.
11. In a way yes, I never really thought much about SL dating it didn’t interest me until my partner came along then my mindset certainly changed.
12. Of course, I think it’s amazing that talented people create items for us to use and wear inworld and make a living of of them in RL, it puts into perspective what a person can and will do.
13. Hmm tough question. I can’t think of anything.
14. No I certainly wouldn’t, I don’t want to be any more addicted to SL than I already am lol.
15. I believe people tend to be freer in SL so their attitudes may take on a nasty turn at times.
16. I guess it’s taught me a bit of something, I’m quite thrifty with my L$ I’ll shop around and find bargains and I tend to not spend over certain amounts on stuff. I’m cheap at heart I guess lol.

18. I think it could be interesting but might take a bit to get used too.
19. Photoshop… I never would have thought to teach myself to draw and use Photoshop like I do now. Money too, I tend to shop around in RL now as well as in SL.

Han Held holds the better traits of my personality, I wish I had her happiness and optimism, and I wish her asssertiveness worked as well for me in rl as it does for her in opensim.

I think it does unless you make a concious effort otherwise. I think there’s a lull in-world, a temptation to let down your guard when maybe you shouldn’t -that’s something I try to avoid.

I’m not a fashionista, so I have no idea.

Name three skills you attribute to having learned or honed in second life alone:
1)Social Media: I had an fb and twitter before becoming active on Han Held; but by being active on social media as Han Held I’ve learned how personally enriching it can be, but also I’ve come up on hard limits on how useful it is for accomplishing anything. It’s been a valuable learning experience and the social media aspect of virtual worlds is probably one of my most satisfying things to have mastered.
2)Server + SL/estate management: I’ve learned how to set up opensim and allow people to connect to my server, also how to manage an estate.
3)Layout and Design: through my work with the Arcadia Asylum group, I’ve had to make layouts and I’m getting a feel for how to set up an exhibit properly.

Just wanted to add another thought… Another great thing about the memes and their ongoing popularity is that I get to see links here to blogs I never knew were out there. I love blogs! In my spare (hahahaha) time I come back to these posts and then just surf the various blog urls. I read the memes and will read through other posts. I’m sure I’m not the only one who does this.
