Friday Find: It all starts with a smile

This week I’m covering a sim that I have blogged before, however I wanted to highlight it again this week because there is a contest going on and you know I can never resist a good contest.

The sim is owned by Kaelyn Alecto who has done an incredible job of putting it all together. I am planning to go back and take more pictures for the contest, for today I will go with this one.

For more information about the contest, visit Kaelyn’s blog and join the contest flickr group.

Weekly Roundup

  1. The Drax Files Radio Hour – I didn’t do weekly roundup last week so didn’t get a chance to mention last week’s episode of drax files as well. Finally listened to them both today and they are, as always, very informative. Last week they spoke about oculus rift in detail. This week Ben Lang gives insight into virtual reality and immersion. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on it and how he sees Second Life in that regard. Jo also mentioned her new flickr group, “Second Life is looking good” where she encourages people to share new and updated images of SL. Drax also has his #SLLooksGoodToday twitter hashtag going strong. I hope you guys can contribute to both of these and get some updated images of Second Life out there.
  2. 21 Shoe Event – Today is March 21st so that means the 21 shoe event is going on, it happens on the 21st of every month. I went and picked up some nice shoes today, thought you might like to as well. You can see all of the ones that are available this month on their blog.
  3. Holidays this March: Yesterday was Nowruz, Spring Equinox & International day of Happiness. Also, this week was American Chocolate week. Now next week is my spring break! 😀 March is just full of happy and exciting holidays. We have family friends that celebrate Nowruz so we always celebrate with them. I hope whatever you are celebrating, it brings you all joy and don’t forget to eat lots of chocolate! I might be travelling a bit next week so I’ll let you know if I won’t be around/blogging as much.
  4. Queen the Movie – This bollywood movie was released in theaters in India on March 7th and I have been dying to get my hands on it. Can’t wait to see it available in my area soon. It stars Kangana Ranaut whom I just adore. I first fell in love with her in the movie Fashion when she played a drug-addicted supermodel. In Queen she is left at the alter and decides to go on her honeymoon by herself. As she travels the world and meets new people, she gains new experiences and discovers her own identity. I’ve been listening to the songs of this movie for weeks now, this one is one of my favs.
  5. Top 10 Second Life Men’s Fashion Brands – Recently I saw this article that listed the top 10 men’s fashion brands. That got me thinking, what do you think the Top 10 Men’s Fashion Brands are in Second Life? Most of my shopping for ManBerry consists of things I find at The Mens Dept, Fatewear, DECO and a few other stores. So this is for clothing, which do you think are the top brands for men these days? I know this will depend on people’s taste as well, but it would be great to see which ones people suggest. Then perhaps poor ManBerry could add more to his wardrobe.

  • I have noticed men are just as picky if not more so, about what they wear in SL. My husband likes that bad-boy-biker style so 90% of his clothes come from LaPointe & Bastchild. So if the hair doesn’t come from Wasabi Pills, and clothes from L&B it’s difficult to get him to try it. He did, however try some Tableau Vivant hair so he’s expanding LOL.

I believe the best clothes for men is [hoorenbeek] His mix and match items are magnificent. Complete quality and customer support. Great looking Mesh.

  • I tend to buy for my SL partner at Fatewear lately, as he loves the giftcard system and adores the clothes. (He even went on his OWN to buy more stuff *faint*) Also Gabriel, mostly because its transferable and all-around-goodlooking. We recently went to Lapointe after a long period of not having done so – and were pleasantly surprised at the quality & style of the mens gear there.

Talk about Slink hands and feet, I really wish Belleza would make appliers for my skin for these items. Miss Strawberry help us to get Belleza on the ball already.

  • I suspect that the “Top 10 SL Menswear Brands” could also be named “AKA: places where Skell doesn’t really shop at much” because I’m hardly Mr Normal when it comes to my shopping habits 😉

That said, I agree with other posters here about Lapointe & Bastchild, for both clothing and footwear, especially if you’re into leather and the whole biker look, but they also have really good jeans (and, of course, the for guys getting dragged along to SL weddings, L&B have highly-customisable formalwear, too).

Gabriel have always been a top menswear store for me, and they’ve evolved with mesh and keep coming out with great new stuff. Even way back when clothing was just layers and sculpts, Gabriel were pushing the envelope but keeping it relatively mainstream and acceptable to the average guy who didn’t mind shifting just slightly away from jeans-n-tees.

FATEwear isn’t my usual style, but they have some good items, and I can usually find something I can work with there. (Again, the caveat that Skell doesn’t do ‘normal’ very often; only under duress!)

I’m highly impressed with clothing coming from newer designers such as VRSION KONVERT, Lucien Marcelo, and XIAJ. While XIAJ started out with innovative ‘Kokon to Zai’-inspired clothing, he seems to be taking more of a nerd-chic slant of late, but VK and LM are both from the Rick Owens school of clean monochrome lines that I absolutely love.

Other firm favourites of mine for clothing and accessories include: Grasp, A:S:S, DECO, and Remarkable Oblivion. For skins: Tableau Vivant, Belleza, Birth, Fruk, Æros, and Mr Bloch. Footwear: Flite (if you can grab a pair; all his styles are limited to 100 copies only), Eudora, Lucien Marcelo (again) and L&B.

And underwear/swimwear (highly important!) has Vitamen still as my go-to, especially for the adult-rated stuff. You want the old crown jewels shown off at their hottest, you get a gay guy to design your undies 😉

  • I’m not a blogger or fashion critic. Still I put on male apparels once in a while. I especially focus on boyish look so many pieces in my inventory are in urban style. I have and especially like : (not in order)

    Kal Rau,
Tableau Vivant (wish they release male items again)

  • Thank you guys, I hadn’t been to Lapointe & Bastchild in a while. I’m definitely going to drag Manberry there and take him shopping. Skell I’ve been loving XIAJ more and more as well. And Perceived, Kal Rau is also one that’s been on my favs list. You guys proved me with some names that I actually didn’t hear about before either, so definitely going to visit. Thanks! <3

  • Good day! I could have sworn I’ve been to this
blog before but after browsing through some of the post I realized it’s new to me.
Nonetheless, I’m definitely happy I found it and I’ll be bookmarking and checking back frequently!
