Second Life Book Cover Meme
I have been pretty busy with RL stuff so I wasn’t able to blog my Friday Find last week, but will continue it this week.
You can blame this meme on Bear Silvershade and Botgirl Questi. You see Botgirl has a twitter account which I religiously follow because she tweets the most thought provoking and hilarious things. However, she also as an alter-ego, Evil Botgirl Questi who also has her own twitter account. Her tweets are a bit more devilish and you know that instantly gets my attention.
Evil Botgirl likes to poke me from time to time and after a somewhat amusing twitter conversation a few days ago, she decided to create a book cover out of one of my older images. That got the attention of a few other tweeters that requested to pre-order a copy. Would you buy this book? I think I would just out of curiosity, even though I have not read the original Fifty Shades of Grey.
So in the comments of my Sexual Meme last week, Bear Silvershade suggested that I turn that book cover into a meme, “avatar in fiction” he called it. I thought that it would be a pretty fun idea and a great topic for a photography challenge which so many of you have requested.
Meme instructions: Create a book cover to show your avatar in fiction. It does not have to be based on a real book, it can be one that you make up. Don’t forget to leave a link to your cover in the comments and share it in the Blog Memes flickr group.
I didn’t have time to do my own book cover so a big thanks to Botgirl for letting me use the one she did of me. I hope you guys are able to participate and have fun with this meme.
I did want to talk about the poll I did last week regarding the memes. A few of you were concerned and contacted me privately as well, offering to assist with continuing the memes if I didn’t want to. It’s not that I don’t want to, I really enjoy doing them but I wasn’t sure if everyone else still enjoyed them as well or if they were getting tired of them.
Luckily, because of the poll, I now know that at least 221 of you love them and look forward to them every week. So yes, I will definitely be continuing the memes. They give me a break from the redundant fashion blogging and pave a way for me to get a bit more creative and put more thought into my posts. They also give me the opportunity to read your responses to the memes which have made me laugh and cry throughout the year. You guys have shared so much of yourselves and your personal lives with me through these memes, I don’t know how to thank you but I appreciate you so much.
The memes will continue in 2014 for another year (or for as long as I am able to do them) and they can all still be found in my Blog Challenges category.
Final Note: As I said in my movie poster meme, I am not sure if this violates any copyright laws. It’s my own picture and nothing was taken directly from the original book cover so hopefully it should be ok and we can have a little fun with this. (EDIT: Vaki is a lawyer and she gave some good guidelines to follow so we don’t have any copyright issues, so please read her comments below) Thank you Vaki! <3

Only sickness can hold be back from doing your memes. Thats whats been happening recently. Wanted to do the sexual meme but then had to go to the hospital last week. No worries though, please! Going home tomorrow and until then having my mind rattle with potential book covers 🙂
Oh, come on, you know I’m gonna answer that final note (and you should’ve just asked!).
Your specific image is just fine. It doesn’t even look like the book cover, and you’ve changed the book cover’s name and author to make it clearly a parody. You’re peachy.
However, I remember the movie poster meme very well, and a lot of the people who took up that challenge crossed the infringement line pretty hard, so I do want to address the question early.
Unfortunately, there’s not a good clear rule on How To Not Infringe something like a movie poster or a book cover. The line between derivative works and fair use is less of a “line” and more of a murky swamp of despair. That said, some good guidelines:
– Make it your own. Don’t create an exact replica of your favorite book cover or movie poster or other image, just starring your avatar in the central role; add something creative and original that makes it unique to you. (Seriously, copyright-wise, putting your own creative and original stamp on stuff makes a big difference; direct copying of an image is not a good plan).
– Consider a name change! Berry got her point across, and made a cute pun, by making her book “Fifty Shades of Strawberry.” Puns are good. Exact copying is less good.
– Have fun with it. If you do something that pokes fun at your chosen book or puts a twist on the book, you’re probably fine.
– List yourself as the book’s author (or a friend who’s okay with it), not the actual book’s author.
Just a few suggestions that might minimize confusion.

Oh this sounds like a cool challenge……..mind is racing O.o
Hillany, glad to know you’re ok. <3
Vaki, thank you! Those are great points to keep in mind when doing this. And you're right, I should have just asked you, lol. Next time I definitely will. <3

This was such a hoot, and surprisingly quick, too! Thanks, Strawberry!! http://poultryreport.blogspot.com/2014/03/second-life-as-literature.html
I love hanging out with you on Twitter! Funny thing is, I don’t think we’ve ever met “face-to-face” in SL? Maybe once a long time ago? Completely my fault since I’m only there these days working on projects. Anyway, thanks for the mention and I look forward to seeing what people come up with.

Why didn’t I find Berry’s blog sooner??… Is it wrong I’m thinking “woo can’t wait for Monday for the next meme”… don’t answer that xD In a nutshell: I LOVE MONDAY MEMES! Fascinating seeing the individuality and creativity that go in to these from Berry and friends to all her participants. I don’t even have a blog but like to join in on Flickr and the SL feed! I reckon Berry should start choosing a winner of the week ;pp xxxx

I am so loving this week’s meme Berry, as awesome as a movie poster one, though I am hoping maybe we can get a Tv show meme. What do you think?
This is my contribution for this week, I hope you like it:

My two cents…
http://auryn-beorn.blogspot.com/2014/03/cover-book-challenge-neverending.html
It took me a while to figure out what to do, and I’m not at all funny, but this is a homage to one of my favorite books of all time – one I vividly remember as being one I had to grow into, and the second half was incomprehensible to me until I had learned to hate.
