Enabling Facebook Notifications for your Close Friends & Favorite Facebook Pages

If you have a Facebook profile for your Second Life avatar, you probably already know that the SL community on Facebook is very friendly and active. Everyday that I login to my SL facebook, I am greeted by at least 5 to 10 friend requests from other SLers. I always accept, as long as I can clearly see that they are in Second Life, because to me that’s what social networks are about: friending and socializing and sharing. However, as your friend list grows bigger and you like more and more facebook pages you will start to lose control of your newsfeed and might even miss important things in there that you definitely do not want to miss. So I thought I would do a quick tutorial on how to fix a few of your FB settings so you don’t miss anything important from close friends or your favorite facebook pages.

Close Friends:

I have a few close friends on Facebook and I want to make sure I don’t miss what they are posting because I’m always curious about what’s going on in their lives (and also cuz I’m a total stalker). So all you have to do is go to their profile and hover over the “friends” button on their cover page and you will get the above menu popping up. From there you can activate “close friends” and make sure “show in news feed” and “get notifications” are also checked. But don’t worry, Facebook doesn’t tell your friends that you’ve done this and are stalking them in any way whatsoever. This way you won’t miss anything they post on Facebook and can stalk them like a pro!

Favorite Facebook Pages:

Did you know that Facebook doesn’t always show you every update a Facebook Page makes? So if you’re a fan of a Facebook Page and you want to support them or just want to stay in the loop, getting notifications is the best way to do it. All you have to do is go to the Facebook Page you want to follow (here’s a link to mine). Hover over the “Liked” button and make sure to activate “Get Notifications” and “Show in Newsfeed” this way you’ll never miss any posts from them. I’ve done this to a few pages I want to keep track of: the Second Life facebook page and also some pages of designers and bloggers that I don’t want to miss posts from.

That’s about it, pretty easy huh? Now you won’t miss an important post again! Also, don’t forget to click over and friend & stalk me on my FB profile and like my FB page! Here are my links:

Hey Strawberry – does Facebook not delete SL Facebook pages anymore? I thought they went on a mass kind of clean-out of any accounts that they didn’t deem to be held by flesh-and-blood people, which I found kind of crazy…

  • Hi Kitti, yes Facebook absolutely does delete Facebook PROFILES of Second Life avatars because they only want “real people” to have profiles. So I don’t recommend having a profile for your sl avatar. I have one but I’m not that attached to it and only use it for games and if it got deleted, it really wouldn’t bug me.

However, Facebook does allow anyone to have a Facebook PAGE which I talked about in this tutorial here: Creating an Effective Facebook Page for your SL™ Brand: https://strawberrysingh.com/2012/03/15/how-to-create-an-effective-facebook-page-for-your-sl-brand
    which you may find informative.

  • Wow! I thought that was what facebook has been doing. Thank you Strawberry, this was very informative. Now I have to create a page in case they try that again! I had to close out my first sl profile because they blocked me from doing anything there from messaging to liking a page.

  • Apparently just liking a page and adding notifications doesn’t guarantee that all posts will show up in your news feed. I’ve received this message from a few pages I follow. You can, however, add pages to Interests, which allows you to categorise them nicely. I have one for the bloggers I follow on Facebook, for instance. The nice thing about this is YOU get to choose how to organise them! You can also manage the types of notifications you want to receive on the list. All you have to do is click on the Add to Interests Lists (shown in your photo above) and it then walks you through setting up a list, or allowing you to add it to an existing one. You can go into your Interests lists and edit, delete or add new ones at any time.

If only my SL inventory was as organised!

  • Peep, wow I didn’t know that! I’ve never played around with the interests. I’m going to look into it, thanks for the info.

  • What this does NOT do is enable email notifications.

If you have way too many FB friends (over 3,100 in my case), you’re going to miss stuff in the avalanche of posts in your feed and Notifications; if you want to actually be NOTIFIED, you won’t be.

  • Hi,
Just lately I’m getting notifications in my in-box every time a page I like or a friend posts something new & it’s driving me crazy as it’s far too many.

I can’t work out how to only receive notifications on things I’ve commented on.

I’d really appreciate some tips on this please.
