No More Gridlines in Beta Viewer

So I did this post really quickly as you can see since I’m not even wearing my dress properly. (I’m just going to be over here crying in the corner). I realized after I took the quick snaps that I am wearing the corset under the skirt and well, let’s just pretend that never happened, ok? Deal.

Now, if you don’t have Ms. Inara Pey’s informative blog in your readers, you really should add it now. I always read hers and Nalates for all the latest technological news in Second Life. Well this morning I read her post about the Beta viewer 3.4.3.267755 which was released on December 5th, 2012, you can click over to her blog for all the details but basically she said that the gridlines (tiling) issue that has plagued the majority of SL bloggers and photographers has been fixed.

I quickly left a comment in her post professing my love to her (how could I not?) and then immediately downloaded the latest beta viewer. I decided to really test it out by running two viewers at once using my alt once again. I quickly threw on a fancy dress and totally wore it wrong. Then I headed down to a very elaborate sim that can be quite laggy at times and snapped both of these raw shots.

So here’s the issue. I normally take all of my pictures at 5760×3084, which is exactly 3 times my screen resolution. However, I noticed when I tried to do that, I got that bar on the side. In fact, if I took an image above 4000 width, then it just wouldn’t work. However, at 4000, you can see it is spotless without any gridlines.

Both of these images are complete raw shots, they have not been photoshopped or cropped and their full original sizes can be viewed on flickr if you click the images.

Thank you Inara for pointing this out, looks like I have a new viewer preference. Download the Beta Viewer now!

  • Thank you, love for the link back and kind words. Love you as well :).

It’s worth noting that Runitai does specify a limitation to the fix in his JIRA comments (hence the JIRA comment being reproduced in full (a;though I really should have drawn attention to it in my blog post).

Even so, for me going from 1440×900 to nigh-on 2.5 times that without issues is, for me, simply awesome. I’m now itching to go take a dozen or so tezt shots and see how they come through Pinnacle processing for video stills. Will let you know the results if I do!

Note that all the TPV’S that use latest LL dev code already had that fixed!

  • All I can say is…. finally! 😀

  • *chuckles with zz*

I was just going to ask if that issue was one in tpv’s as I usually have issues with the regular viewer.

Lovely post and don’t worry about tucking your corset in Berry. Still looks nice.

  • I get the same problem, Berry, but hey, I am happy to even be rid of gridlines at 4000. Such a relief not worrying if a line is going to ruin an image (by running through a light coloured sail for example)

  • What happens for you if you try “Highres Snapshot” (which is basically 2x resolution) instead of a custom window size? Is that fixed for you as well?

(what I like about that setting is that I can snap shots rapidly, but with custom window size, I always have to manually hit “Save”)

  • @strawberrysingh – Awesome! Now if we could only map control-` to whatever the custom save size should be…

  • @zzbottom

    Incorrect.

LL explicitly request TPVs do not merge-up code from the viewer-dev branch, and the majority comply with this request. As it is, none of the V3.x TPVs incorporates the MAINT-628, which I’ve verified through tests today.

  • To me is not working on high-res. Such a shame, I had hopes for this, since it sure will save me time in ps. I hope next viewer does. 🙁

Just tried a snapshot at 4x screen size (6016×3681) using the latest Cool VL viewer 1.26.5 (22) and the image looks fine at 100%: no tile lines, and no black bar!

  • Kim Link

Update: in Cool VL, the upper limit for Custom snapshot is 6016px wide. So that’s less than 4x my screen size. It looks fine though.

  • Thank you for all the help and advice you post here on your blog! A bit late for me to jump on SL blogging but am enjoying learning. SL beta viewer worked for me and my carpal tunnel and I wanted to personally thank you XD!

  • I recently switched my card to a GTX660 and happens just like in your photo, black stripe. On my other pc which has a GTS250 card is perfect. I do not really understand the GTX660 card is far superior to my previous card, the game does not follow the technology in the new video card? I’m going back to my old pc :/
