• Seems interesting but the viewer doesn’t incorporate the fixes for a very serious display bug (noted here https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SH-2276). Without those Shining fixes, many of us with nVidia cards crash when running it.

  I know that Firestorm includes the fixes referenced in the above JIRA – maybe Exodus can leverage that work?

• Hi Masha, I wasn’t aware of this issue as I don’t seem to be having any crashing problems. But this is a great thing to note for when the developers are back updating it again. Thank you for pointing that out.

• Thanks very much for the tutorial Berry, it was helpful! I was wondering if the photo quality suffers from turning off antialiasing? The tutorials I’ve read about getting high resolution photos always recommend keeping it on.

• Did you know, you can change how the inventory looks in Exodus? I hate their icons, but you can make it look like the default inventory in the SL viewer. Go to the gear tab on the side bar, interface settings, and there is an Inventory section, you check vanilla!

  Now you only have one thing you want in the veiwer for it to be perfect.

• Great article! For anyone worried about shining fixes, we have incorporated it in our current test build. The next release will be soon. Keep your eyes peeled 🙂

• Kit, to be honest I have never used anti-aliasing in any of my pictures and I never noticed the quality going down for me. I always take very high-res images and I believe that helps.

  Great work here, i did what u said above but still have one problem, is that when i go to Graphics ‘ Deferred rendering’ and ‘Ambient occluion’ are not turned on to me, even though i used to use kirstens before and everything was fine, but when i removed kirstens and downloaded Exodus i got this problem and lost my sl shadows.

  I tried everything i know and still no shadows :/
  Pls let me know if u know how to help me on this, i would really appreciate ur help, thank you!

• Hey Lara, if the two tick boxes are greyed out, you may be experiencing a problem related to your memory pool being low.

  Sadly, I don’t think there is anything you can do about that in the current version. You may have more luck with the next update of Exodus, which will be coming out soon. 🙂

• I am using Exodus Viewer since october and I like it, I had the same problem with shadows but after I disable my antialasing all was good. But I still have sometimes the nasty lines on my picks , if I enable the DOF I have huge lines, generaly it is a very good viewer, on my wish list about Exodus is less lag and no nasty lines.

• OMG! Thank you so much, Berry! I have always been able to enable shadows in other shadow viewers (in ultra too), but they never appeared!. So thank you so much for finding out why. I am so sad about Kirtsens, since it was my favorite photo viewer (esp becuase it was the only one I could get shadows with), I am downloading this now. I hope I have good luck with it. Have a Happy Holiday and thank you for all your incredible images and tutorials through out the year. I really owe most of my improved skills to your tutorials <3

• Okay I tried this viewer earlier today and for the most part I really like it. I have a couple of things that are bugging me but so far so good… one is that if I turn on ambient occlusion, I crash, every single time. so still no pretty shadows for me, but since I didn’t have them in firestorm either, I’m assuming this just means I need a better comp/graphics card. –

  The other is more aggravating for me. It’s a small thing but it’s bugging me, I can’t find anywhere to turn on hover tips. I use hover tips all the time so its a serious problem. Any thoughts anyone? I did want to comment also that I found that the site is not as complete as it could be in terms of… simple instructions i.e. this is how you do this…sort of a Exodus for dummies. LOL

• Oh nooo!. I crash when attempting ultra. I guess I will have to wait until I guess I mew system…

• I have installed it on my Ubuntu machine. I found that although Ubuntu complains – it says it’s a package of “bad quality” – it works fine and is nice and fast.

  Here’s a question: the version I got onto my computer doesn’t yet have support for neck and root attachment points (as SL3.2 and FS do). Is that in the pipeline?

• @Lila I run my shadows on high not on ultra ,try to disable your anisotropic filtering too not only Antialiasing , maybe will work for you this way <3

  suggest you also take a look at Niran’s Viewer; I’ve reviewed bot the Beta (https://modemworld.wordpress.com/2011/12/12/nirans-the-viewer-that-dares-to-be-different/) and the Final release versions (https://modemworld.wordpress.com/2011/12/26/nirans-viewer-daring-to-be-different-2/).

  While Exodus remains my 2nd Viewer of choice, Niran’s is closer to being a “successor” to Kirsten’s in the truest sense. It also benefits from OpenGL fixes, the V3.2 UI and a *lot* of additional graphics customisation from Niran. As a photographer, you may find it interesting.

• I’ve been using Exodus for a few months too, and its been terrific for a number of reasons. I especially love the help chat which pops up an IRC box in the viewer, so doesn’t use laggy in world group chat. also, I have found the devs very helpful, especially on the rare instance that i crash.

  The FXAA setting is actually a type of anti aliasing, so with this enabled you get beautiful shadows. I understand there’s some really super new graphics features in the coming release too. oh, and the forums are great for finding out things, making suggestions and bug reporting.

  My understanding is that Nirans viewer is a fork of kirstens so I guess you would expect it to be similar. I personally found it very clunky to run, even with my 580 graphics card, but Exodus is smooth as a baby’s bum! I’ve actually got ultra high fps which I could hardly believe at over 100. I’ll put the screen grab up on my flickr.

  In the end, we all choose what best suits our own machines. I just think its great to see a new viewer emerge with such talented and enthusiastic devs 🙂

• ok so i took the plunge and followed your tutorial and now i have shadows! yay.. but the lines are still persisting in this viewer for me 🙁 i wish i could have some of your magic to make those go away because they are totally ruining my otherwise awesome photos!

• That’ll be fixed in the next update, only seemed to affect some users, bug from Linden Lab’s end.

• Hi Strawberry. I’m using the Exodus viewer now which I love love love! I couldnt run shadows on any viewer at all before and on Exodus they are perfect! I found out about it thanks to your tutorial 🙂
  I’ve got one question though… I’ve seen people walking around with the word ‘(Vanilla)’ next to their name which means its a viewer. I’ve search on Google for a Vanilla viewer lol but haven’t really found anything. Any ideas?

• Vanilla is the name we use for Viewers that identify their-self as the offical Viewer 2.0 or 3.0, maybe we should note that somewhere…

• New Exodus viewer is out! Also includes Karl’s alpha tester mesh deformer, but it also has an on/off switch. Very nifty! And some incredible *new* graphics effects. http://www.exodusviewer.com

• I installed the viewer, and although my dream was to have a good viewer for pics with Phoenix Like/V1 UI, I like Exodus UI better than others I’ve tried for pictures.

  But anyway, I am having trouble with shadows: even with Ultra quality, the shadows look like they are moving and quality isn’t good. I changed all the settings, with /without antialising on, but shadows do not change. Even changed my Nvdia 9800GT card settings but nothing worked. • Hi! I really loved the Exodus, but I have a little problem that I’ve tried everything and can not resolve. My avatar is simply not on the floor, I’ve been a good distance from the ground with several inches high. I thought it was because of alphas, so i detached everything and solves nothing. And this only happened in the Exodus. Anyone had this problem? Knows how to solve? Ty so much! ♥

• Exodus is the best viewer I ever used. The first MacOS-viewer working like a MacOS-software should do.
  No crashes at all. Everything works as i should do.
  If Linden Lab hade this viewer from the beginning we hade been a lot more avatars today.
