The Book Meme

Book Meme
(click here to see raw shot, I actually prefer it)

Usually when I’m feeling down, the first thing I tend to grab is some chocolate and a favorite book that I’ll sit and read to distract myself and get my mind off things. I’ve been doing that a lot lately and figured a book meme would be an interesting one to share and discuss. I think you can tell a lot about a person by the books they enjoy and read. I did find this meme on a RL blog but felt it was too long so cut it short and changed things around quite a bit.

Meme instructions: Copy and paste the following questions and answers into your post, delete my answers and input your own. Don’t forget to leave a link to your post in the comments so we can all come and see. If you create an image for this meme, feel free to share it in the Blog Memes Flickr Group.

  1. Are you a bookworm? – I’m not actually. I used to be a lot more in highschool/college. I do still read quite a bit (I schedule it actually) but I admit I read blogs, articles and magazines on a daily basis more often.
  2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic? – I prefer hardcovers because I tend to grab really old islamic books or poetry from my father’s library and the hardcovers are usually in the best condition. Also hardcovers are usually a lot prettier. I have a kindle as well but tbh I don’t really use it as much as I should.
  3. Which book is your favorite? – This will sound cliche but it really is Pride and Prejudice. I have lost count the amount of times I’ve read it. I am also obsessed with Midsummer Night’s Dream and have read it multiple times as well.
  4. Which children’s book is your favorite? – There are so many that I love but I will have to go with these two: Dear Mr. Henshaw and Where the Sidewalk Ends.
  5. What’s the last book you’ve read?Zealot
  6. Name your top five favorite writers: – Jane Austen, Kahlil Gibran, Shel Silverstein, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and a tie between Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume.
  7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you:The Prophet
  8. Favorite & least favorite book genres? – I am not a big fan of fantasy, science fiction and such fiction that you find these days (probably why I’m the only one on the planet that hasn’t read Harry Potter – don’t judge :P). I prefer poetry, romance and literary fiction as well as non-fiction.
  9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? – This is actually going to be the same book for both. I absolutely loved the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy much more than the 2005 adaptation with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet. I just feel as if 2 hours was not enough to cover the book properly and a big chunk of it was sacrificed. I also feel that Keira was a bit too childish and giggly to play Elizabeth. Finally, and I’m totally biased with this one because I love him, no one makes a better Mr. Darcy than Colin Firth.
  10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? – Yes, I’m actually guilty of doing this often. I am attracted to beautiful hardcovers with well thought out and elaborate art or photography.
  11. Where do you usually buy your books? – I do a lot of shopping at a local Barnes & Noble which I frequent every Sunday afternoon as well as a local used book store. I also buy a lot of books from Amazon, but my favorite place is the used book store. Old pre-owned books tend to tell a story of their own just by the condition they are in or by the notes you may find in them. I love reading very old books.
  12. Do you go to the library? – Yes, all the time. I am a big supporter of libraries. I also donate and volunteer there and encourage a lot of library assignments and activities for my students.
  13. How many books do you own? – I would say in my own personal collection that I have in my room there are about 30 to 40 that I love and keep and the rest I tend to recycle/donate often. My father is the one with the big library so in this house I’d say we definitely have several hundred books.
  14. If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on? How to be a successful second life shopaholic and lose all your lindens.

If you decide to do a picture for this meme and are looking for a good place to find books, book shelves and other book-friendly furniture, definitely head down to Alouette. She has an amazing selection of home decor for book lovers.

Please remember that you can participate in any of the memes/challenges at any time. You’ll find them all under my Blog Challenges category along with other memes and challenges I’ve done over the years.

    1. Are you a bookworm? – I am yes. I love to read. I read for mostly enjoyment. The occasional “How-to” or “Self-Help” or Historical type. Mostly just entertainment though.

    2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic? – I prefer hardback, then paperback, then electronic. I do have an e-reader and I enjoy it, but I mainly buy the $1.99 or $.99 books on there for something to have a quick read waiting in the car for my kids or whatever.

    3. Which book is your favorite? – Oh wow, one favorite. Maybe “Tale of the Body Thief” by Anne Rice. Her whole Vampire Chronicles are probably just my favorite.

    4. Which children’s book is your favorite? – Haha When my kids were little I LOVED reading to them. Dr. Seuss “Mr. Brown Can Moo” they loved it and so did I. All the Sandra Boynton books were really cute too. There’s always Harry Potter that is just amazing, but more youth than childrens. When I was in elementary & middle school, I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

    5. What’s the last book you’ve read? – Just finished last night “Concealed In Death” by J.D. Robb

    6. Name your top five favorite writers: – Anne Rice, Nora Roberts (J.D. Robb), James Patterson, Johanna Lindsey, Nicolas Sparks

    7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you: – The Left Behind Series by Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins

    8. Favorite & least favorite book genres? – Romance is my favorite I guess… I also like mysteries and biographies. I don’t much care for science fiction.

    9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? – The Harry Potter Movies were done nicely into movies, I thought. The Lord of the Rings as well. The worst thing about adaptations is the time constraint to get the important parts into the movie. Interview With the Vampire was very well done, while The Queen of the Damned was absolutely HORRID!!!

    10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? – I do this often as well. I just recently bought “Big Girl Panties” by Stephanie Evanovich because it had a really cute cover. I actually loved the book as well.

    11. Where do you usually buy your books? – I shop at Booksamillion, Barnes and Noble, Wal Mart, Target, Sam’s Club actually has a nice selection of books, and Amazon. I also am a member of a few book clubs online, Doubleday, Literary Guild and Rhapsody.

    12. Do you go to the library? – I don’t, no.

    13. How many books do you own? – ummmm a LOT. 500+ I would say.

    14. If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on? “How to be a successful second life shopaholic and lose all your lindens.” This sounds about right…I would be happy to co-author this one with you lol.

  • I can’t comment at Not Quite Pink, but in case she comes here – Geisha: A Life was written by Mineko Iwasaki, one of the sources for the book and the top Geisha in Kyoto’s Gion Kobu before she retired. I really highly recommend it.

  • I totally agree with #9. Collin Firth is the perfect Mr. Darcy.

    And for my answers:
    1. Are you a bookworm? Absolutely, I can eat a book in four hours flat.
I read fiction, trashy novels, fantasy, sci fi, and the occasional business book or self help book. On occasion, nonfiction, political, poetry, or children’s book.

    2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic?
I prefer paperback. But I have been lured by my Kindle on many occasions and I like Amazon’s Kindle deals. I absolutely hate reading a recipe book on Kindle. Hardcovers are expensive, I don’t own many.

    3. Which book is your favorite? wow, now that’s a loaded question. My fav of all time is the Dragonlance series. Great escape.

    4. Which children’s book is your favorite? one fish, two fish. Well most Dr. Seuss books. My ten year old LOVES me to read them out loud to him. We act all silly while reading them out loud. 🙂

    5. What’s the last book you’ve read? Questions are the Answers. By Allan Pease.

    6. Name your top five favorite writers: Neale Donald Walsch, Marianne Williamson, Marget Weis & Tracy Hickman, Paula brackston, Cassandra Clare

    7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you: Conversations with God

    8. Favorite & least favorite book genres? Fav: fantasy fiction. Least: any fiction that rape is portrayed as ok. Since I have RL history with that topic, it makes me sick to read it. I can actually get palpitations and sweat just reading about rape. NOT FUN OR ENTERTAINING.

    9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? Favorite: Ender’s Game. Least fav: last Harry Potter book. The movie just doesn’t do it justice.

    10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? Yes, Conversations with God.

    11. Where do you usually buy your books? Over the last two years: Amazon exclusively.

    12. Do you go to the library? Never.

    13. How many books do you own? Not many. I cull the herd on a regular basis, give them away and such. I own many electronic kindle versions. Maybe 100 total. Most of the books I keep on the shelves are reference books for my RL business and job.

    14. If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on? “A needle in a haystack, RL love in SL” I did find my RL hubby in SL. On a park bench, watching SL fireworks. 🙂

  • Yay! Book meme.
Since I’m at work and didn’t install PS on my new lappy yet, I can’t do the “whole” thing and will probably work on the pic later, when I’m home, but I had time to answer the meme questions.

Are you a bookworm? – I am…periodically. There are months when I read book after a book and there are times like now – I started 2 different books about 3 months ago and put them all away to cover in dust until I’m on the reading period again, lol. Idk why this happens but it happens every few months. I either read like crazy or don’t read at all.
Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic? – Hardcovers are awesome if you like to display your books. I love hard covers and always prefer them, however it’s easier to read and carry a paperback…I’m not a fan of electronic at all, I like holding the book and its smell. I feel like I should add that I hate glued books and avoid them as much as I can. I rather spend more money on a string/thread binded book than glued shit that falls apart while you read. It should be forbidden! lol
Which book is your favorite? – My all time fav is actually a short story “Survivor Type” by Stephen King, which you can find in one of his short stories books called “The Skeleton Crew”. I think it’s his best piece ever and if it was a person, I’d bow down and kiss its feet, lol.
Which children’s book is your favorite? – A Wonder Book. Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Again it’s a short stories book.
What’s the last book you’ve read? – Doctor Sleep by Stephen King.
Name your top five favorite writers: – Stephen King, Graham Masterton, Clive Barker, Guy N. Smith, Dean Koontz. Can you tell yet that I’m a horror fan? lol
Name a book that had a strong impact on you: – Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo by Kai Hermann and Horst Rieck.
Favorite & least favorite book genres? – Horror is my fav obviously, along with based on true story type of books, I also enjoy biographies. Least fav are deffo Harlequins, lol..basically all romance stuff and unicorn-rainbow kind of fantasy, lol.
Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? – Honestly…all S. King’s novels that were made to movies are amazing. There is just one film so far that I find waaay better than book tho…The Running man with Arnie. I’m sure yall know it and love it as much as I do…however the book is just…bad and 100% different. That’s the only King’s book that I truely dislike.
Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? – Not yet, but if I find one that really catches my eye, I will probably do it.
Where do you usually buy your books? – Supermarkets. They always have a good deal for hard covers.
Do you go to the library? – No, not at all, for a few reasons – I don’t have time, I spent too much time there already back in college, and last but not least – I prefer to own stuff, hate having “loans”, not even this type of loan.
How many books do you own? – I have probably around 50 of S. King books, 20 of G. Masterton and bazillion of other horror authors books, however I only keep my master King’s books in my room, the rest of them are in the attic with million of other books that my mom, me, my sister and my mom’s parents gathered.
If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on? I actually thought about writing my thesis about SL and its influence on people’s RL once…so I probably would choose that or a similar topic.

I didn’t. I didn’t in the afternoon either. I’m sure this “thinking” thing is over-rated … Either that, or I’m doing it wrong (most likely). Still you have my replies in the pingbacks 🙂 .

With regards to the movie adaptations of Pride and Prejudice… there are a couple of things I really liked about the Keira Knightley version. The main thing… was her sister Jane. I thought Rosamund Pike did an EXCELLENT job portraying the character of Jane. She is so internal… she keeps her passions to herself. They are deep and very strong, but too well hidden. Rosamund did such an incredible job with that. It helped me understand Jane better than I ever had, even after reading the book and seeing several movies. Also as much as I do love Colin Firth, Matthew Macfadyen is freakin’ dreamy! The moment where he stands there and says, “You have bewitched me body and soul and I l-l-love you…” gets me EVERY DAMN TIME!

Great meme, Berry. I hope your broken heart is starting to mend. Sending you hugs and lots of chocolate.

  • 1. Are you a bookworm? –I totally am! In addition to a few magazines [political mainly] I eat books like a madman – usually before bed at least 1 hour reading time. Helps that we do not own a TV
    2. Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic? – paperback usually – good for travel. My wife loves ebooks, I not so much because paper provides the perfect balance to working and playing in the digital universe known as SL
    3. Which book is your favorite? – I switch between contemporary literary fiction, genre stuff, classics and post-war German literature.
    4. Which children’s book is your favorite? – “Neverending Story” by Michael Ende
    5. What’s the last book you’ve read? – reading right now “THe Kindly Ones” by Jonathan Littel
    6. Name your top five favorite writers: – Max Frisch, Heinrich Boell, Frank Schaetzing, Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut,
    7. Name a book that had a strong impact on you: – Max Frisch: “I am not Stiller!”

    9. Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions? – worst is “Neverending Story”, book by Michael Ende. The movie is horrendous and sooo simpilistic. When you read the book, you realize it is almost about SL – someone should remake it as machinima!
    10. Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone? – yes, at the airport at times but not often!
    11. Where do you usually buy your books? – preowned on Amazon these days or sales at universities in Europe [because you walk more so you walk by places that have lawn sales]
    12. Do you go to the library? – Yes, especially with the kids!

    1.Are you a bookworm?
Not so much anymore. I manage a bookstore so unfortunately the last thing I want to do when I get home after a long day is to pick up another book!
2.Which do you prefer: hardcover, paperback or electronic?
Paperback for sure. Hardcovers are too heavy and large to carry about in my handbag…and I always carry a book in my handbag. Ebook Readers…uhhh no thanks.
    3.Which book is your favorite?
Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon. What can I say…it encompasses everything I love in a book AND I just learnt someone has bought the rights to make it into a 16 ep tv adaptation! *dies* Wow I hope they don’t ruin it..
4.Which children’s book is your favorite?
I have very fond memories of The Famous Five…no particular book, just the series in general.

8.Favorite & least favorite book genres?
Fav – Historical and Romance…pref combined.
    Least Fav – SciFi
    9.Favorite & least favorite book-to-movie adaptions?
    I can’t think of a favourite…most I find are a let down.
Least Fav – OMG. Enders Game. They left out so many cruicial parts. But worst was the lead character who was supposed to be a 6yo at the start…but looked more like a 14yo.
10.Have you ever bought a book based on the cover alone?
All the time! But I’ve learnt my lesson after discovering a few gems with really bad covers.
11.Where do you usually buy your books?
    At work 🙂
12.Do you go to the library?
    Nah, not anymore.
13.How many books do you own?
Less than you’d expect. I moved interstate a year ago and left a bunch behind. I also pass most on after I’ve read them to friends and family.
14.If you were to write a book about Second Life, which topic would you focus on?
Why some adults think its ok to act like children once logged in.
