Materials Project in Second Life
(click here for a closeup raw shot)
The Materials project has reached the Beta Viewer. What is the Materials Project you ask? The Materials Project brings in specific shaders into Second Life which will make objects appear more realistic.
I wanted to show this realism in a video because I felt that was the best way to capture it. Here is the link to the video and I’m also embedding it below. http://youtu.be/LO5vVyoMHJE
To view materials-ready items in Second Life right now, you can follow these simple steps:
- Install the Beta Viewer: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads
- Check “Advanced Lighting Model” under Me > Preferences > Graphics
- Now if you wear any materials-ready items, you should be able to see it.
Damien Fate of FATEwear has already released swim trunks for men that are materials-ready. I am not sure which other designers have released materials-ready items as well. I have asked my friends on plurk about it, if you know of any, please let me know in the comments, I would love to check them out.
This is definitely a feature I’m enthusiastic and excited about. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on more materials ready items to play with!
I also wanted to share some other informative posts about the Materials Project which I think you guys will find useful:

Also, this is my first post for Avatar Blogger Month. I’m not sure if I’ll make all 30 posts but I will definitely give it a try. I hope you guys are participating too! Have a great weekend! <3 » For more of my tutorials, check out my tutorials page.

Hi Cherylblossoms, I use Camtasia. However, there are more screen recording softwares at this link: http://www.plurk.com/p/in7idr

thank you 🙂
Hi Berry,
Here is an interesting question, that I could of asked personally but is probably interesting enough to be public I am about to push a material ready release tomorrow. Is there any scenario that you can think of / know of where a texture changer hud (diffuse texture) can interfere with material information stored in the dress? I tried a couple of viewers and it still worked fine. However I am just a single person and my findings are not exactly representative 🙂 Any thoughts, ideas, experiences would be appreciated.

Shiny swimwear? That’s hot!
Edie, right? Pretty hot!
Steph, I’m so sorry I just noticed your comment right now, a year later. I am hoping you already released the dress and it went well for you. I see Materials ready items all over the grid now with texture changing huds and such as well, so I’m assuming it all works ok. Thanks for dropping by and for the comment and again, apologies I didn’t notice it earlier!
Don’t worry about it, It works fine, I released 60+ outfits with HUD’s unfortunately LL has no script function to change materials yet but textures work fine.
Oh that’s interesting, I didn’t know that. I thought perhaps hair designers such as Mina that have materials in their hair were able to do that. Guess not, hopefully LL will get on that soon.
they might be using their HUD’s and rez a new attachment which would work as long as you have rezzing permissions. Unfortunately it is not possible yet but there is an active JIRA about it
