Essences

Indy

It’s been a week since the start of the month of Ramadan and I have been really enjoying waking up with the family and all the activities that pertain to this month. I did get sick however and had to miss a few fasts but I’m hoping to be back fasting real soon. I thought it would be fun to have an Eid sale on my advertising rates this month. So from now till August 25th, you can get my two month rate at a discounted price. Check out my advertising page for all the rates, information and also links to my site statistics at the bottom. If you already have an ad with me, you can of course also add two months to your current campaign for that price.

The skin I’m wearing in this post is the latest release from Essences and it’s my fav of theirs yet. Indy comes in a variety of tones and eyebrow options. Check out her flickr for all the details. I also love the dark tone, but decided to go with the medium tone for this post.

I wonder...

Finally, today I have been having serious issues with SL viewers. I cannot seem to stay online longer than about 5 mins at a time with firestorm or exodus. I was able to stay on a bit longer with the official viewer but then that also started crashing again. This also happens with my Alt that has less than 5K inventory and also on 3 different regions. I plurked about it earlier and apparently I wasn’t the only one having issues today, here’s the plurk: http://www.plurk.com/p/gy5v7s

While I was on the official viewer I decided to play with depth of field again and then I remembered why I never usually do. It doesn’t really work for me when I hit the snapshot button. I know others that have the same issue and they always IM me and ask and I never have an answer for them. Does anyone know why depth of field does that?

This is a picture I took by hitting the snapshot button and the depth of field just disappeared: https://my.secondlife.com/strawberry.singh/snapshots/50145ea390f79b3315000001
This is a picture I took with the depth of field on by hitting “ctrl~” this is the only way I can capture the depth of field.

So why doesn’t depth of field work when I hit the snapshot button? Anyone have a solution for this?

  • I’ve been having the same issue with DOF. It’s something to do with the resolution. Harlow mentioned that to me, so when I went down to a lower resolution, it showed up, but my picture was crap.

    It’s kind of annoying.

  • I disable DOF for snapshots and just take a Depth snapshot along with the normal one (there’s a dropdown for what to capture). I take both into Photoshop and put the depth snapshot as an alpha channel. After that it’s a matter of playing with levels on the depth map and using a Lens Blur effect.

I’ve had the same issue. Depth of field depends on where you mouse cursor is. Move it and the objects used for depth are re-evaluated. I leave the snapshot box up, get everything set, put my cursor where I want for the right DOF and hit the snapshot keystroke (Ctrl-Shift-S or Ctrl-~) Usually works for me.

  • Have you tried the settings for DoF on the SL wiki page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Depth_of_field

I use them and then the only slider I use is the Camera Focal Length mm in Firestorm in the depth of field tab. I’ve never noticed any huge problems when I’ve used depth of field

  • Playing with this a few days ago, I swore depth of field in FS was being measured not from where the camera is, but from the prim/avatar on which you’ve control-clicked to position the camera. If I control-click on an object further away, the focus of the entire scene changes, though the camera hasn’t moved. I’ll try and take some test shots tomorrow to see if I can duplicate it on my system.

  • Hi Strawberry. I have been having many problems
staying online in any viewer. And it’s really ticking
off. So hence my play time is less and I’m thinking
    why be in at all?

Sl drains all of my memory from my lappy and I know
you have a super computer and you can’t even stay in!
I really feel that they run SL with OUR computers.
I know this can be done. I did try upgrading my Internet
service to have better download capabilities. It helped
    some. Keep us posted.

  • I have also been having trouble for the last oh 6 months or so with my SL and Firestorm viewers crashing every few minutes. It’s so frustrating! I’ve spent hours and hours every few weeks researching, googling, trying to find answers and suggestions for tweaking my settings, trying to download and use any mesh-enabled viewer, all to no avail.

The only viewer I’m able to use that is mesh capable is Phoenix, and of course it’s about to go the way of the dinosaur and only lets me wear one alpha layer for my meshes anyway so it’s very hard to put together outfits for blogging. I’ve tried just about everything to get rid of the crashing issue, and have two brand new awesome computers, so it’s not a hardware thing as far as I can tell. I’ll be a very sad and mesh-less blogger when Phoenix finally dies.

  • Any idea when the Indy skin will be released?

  • Thanks everyone for your advice. I’m not that troubled about the depth of field thing, I usually PS it in anyways. But I did try a few of your tricks and it didn’t work for me still. It’s just that as soon as I hit the snapshot button, the depth of field just vanishes.

I seem to be more stable on the official viewer for now. I am not crashing as much. I am also trying to cut down my inventory as I know that also causes a lot of issues.

Delilas, the Indy skin has already been released and it’s on the upstairs level of the store. This is the exact slurl to the spot where the vendor is, hope it helps you find it: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Red%20Wing/197/119/325

    opgewekt.
