Jane Austen’s Emma

Jane Austen's Emma

When I heard about Harper Ganesvoort’s blog challenge, “fictional characters from your favorite books” in my heart I knew right away that I had to find a way to portray Jane Austen’s Emma.

Most people know that I am a huge Jane Austen fan and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. However, there’s something about Emma Woodhouse that always resonated with me. I think it’s because she’s flawed and reminds me so much of myself. She’s a bit immature, quite naive, so stubborn and very attached to her father.

A few months back I took this test, “Which Jane Austen Heroine Are You?” and I really wasn’t so surprised when the results turned out to be: Emma: “You are Emma Woodhouse of Emma! You like being the queen of your social circle (small and provincial as it may be), and feel it’s your duty to help those less influential than you. You often meddle in the affairs of others, though you do it with a pure heart. You are often deluded in your flights of fancy, but your good intentions and creative spirit make you someone anyone could like.”

I don’t know if much of that is true about me, but I will say that with age I’ve gotten wiser and much less of a meddler. But, at least it was always with good intentions.

I think y’all should do this challenge too. The most difficult thing was finding the right dress. I was trying to find something similar to the one Gwyneth Paltrow is wearing in this picture. I know it’s not exactly the same, but it was still fun trying to get the look.

I recently discovered the BBC version of Emma. I’ve never seen that one and I hear it’s very good. I’m trying to get my hands on the DVD, can’t wait to see how close it is to the book.

I hope you guys also do this challenge, I think it can be a lot of fun and something a bit different than the standard fashion posts.

  • Thanks so much for taking up the challenge! And I knew that someone would take on an Austen character. (I was thinking it would be Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, but it’s early days yet.)

  • Aww, I’m Lizzie. *w*

You are Elizabeth Bennet of Pride & Prejudice! You are intelligent, witty, and tremendously attractive. You have a good head on your shoulders, and oftentimes find yourself the lone beacon of reason in a sea of ridiculousness. You take great pleasure in many things. You are proficient in nearly all of them, though you will never own it. Lest you seem too perfect, you have a tendency toward prejudgement that serves you very ill indeed.

    You Are…Elizabeth Bennet!

Hahaha, I’m my fave character too. *-*

  • Oh…this is beautiful! You make a very lovely Emma! 😀

  • Loved it… took the quiz and I’m Elizabeth Bennet of Pride & Prejudice. hehe

This is a great pic and post…saw the pic on flickr which brought me to read and take the test. I’m right along with some of the ladies here and also Elizabeth Bennet…my fav. At first I thought for sure I would end up being Elinor…I have those tendencies. Well this post definitely has us thinking. 🙂

  • Kavi Aldrin

I read your post and gave the BBC version of Emma a go. I am glad i did, it was very enjoyable 😉

You could also do a Kate Beckinsale Emma! That was my favorite version. 🙂
