My WindLight Settings

UPDATE: February 24th, 2011 – This post is outdated now, please keep up to date with all of my windlight settings on my windlight settings page.

puzzled
Puzzled about which windlight settings to use when trying to shoot images?

Most recent third party viewers are coming equipped with some of the best windlight settings created by SL residents such as AnaLu, Caliah Lyon, CodeBastard Redgrave and Torley Linden. If you don’t already have those, I suggest you visit this link and download & install all of them at once.

I’ve been using these above settings over the years for many of my pictures. Since starting to use SL Shadows I decided to make my own windlight setting which I talked about in this video tutorial. Since then many of you requested I share my setting so I’ve made it available for download. Please remember even when I use this setting, I still play around with the Sun/Moon position and angles each time to get it just to my liking.

You can download this setting below. There is also another setting which a few people have been asking me about for a while so I thought I would add that in too.

Please note that I use these two settings in Second Life Viewer 2.1 and also Kirstens Viewer. I’m not sure how these would work or look in any other viewers.

The second windlight setting is actually to be used without SL shadows. This setting is very similar to the Caliah windlight preset. I love that preset and used to use it often in my photography. After a while though I decided to make my own setting especially designed for my closeup shots that I love to do. It’s great for darker skins because it’s a bit brighter and has a little less red in it. The following is a raw shot from SL using my “closeup” windlight preset.

As you can see it’s a very simple and clean setting. I used this setting to snap and play with the puzzled picture you see at the top of this post. Unless I am wearing a very very pale or light skin, I usually use this setting. If I am wearing a pale or light skin then sometimes the Caliah preset works better for me.

To install both of these presets you will need to download them first and then copy them into the following folders. Please make sure you have shut down Second Life before doing this and follow the instructions for the system that you are running:

Windows XPC:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\windlight\skies

Windows Vista & 7C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\user_settings\windlight\skies

Mac – use Go menu > Go to Folder and paste in: ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife/user_settings/windlight/skies

If you have any questions, problems or difficulties, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Once again you’ve blown me away with your generosity. So many people are just a little too precious about sharing and I think what you do is wonderful. Really, it makes my heart a little lighter to think that there are people still around that do this. I wish I’d had all this information when I first started taking pics! I’ve tried taking shots with shadows in Imprudence btw but there’s a bug apparently that means avatars don’t cast shadows…just objects around them! Hopefully a new version will fix this soon.

  • Thank you Arialle, I hope you find them useful!

Imprudence viewer doesn’t’ seem to like my PC at all. I downloaded it and tried to use it, but nothing ever loaded for me and it crashed continuously so I gave up and uninstalled it after a few tries.

Berry I have tried to download the sl shadows several times but I can not get them to work. I am using the Phoenix viewer on my windows 7. Please help!

Hi! I love your shadow windlight, but it’s not working at all for me. I’ve tried viewer 2.0 and Kristen’s viewer and it’s still not working. Any ideas? Also I was wondering if there was a way I could just manually put in the settings myself. Thank you

  • Latrelly and Adelayda, sorry about the late response.

If you are using Phoenix Viewer then you want to make sure you copy the windlight setting into the Phoenix folder and not the Second Life folder. Then it should show up in the right viewer. Apart from that, I have never used the Phoenix viewer so I’m not sure if my settings will work with that or how it’s setup.

Adelayda, I do not have the manual settings on hand right now and I can’t login to SL at the moment. I can get them for you possibly tomorrow if you need them. The settings on the second tab can be seen up in the second picture in this post. Perhaps it is your video card? What kind of video card are you running? Can you get shadows without my windlight setting?

Hi Hi, I finally got them to work. still not amazing as the puzzle photo but I’m working that 😀 thank you

  • I found out that the spaces and dots I had in the name of the windlight presets were making it difficult for some people to load it into their viewers. Therefore I have re-uploaded the files without any spaces, dots or dashes so hopefully should work better for everyone now.

Sorry to all the people that struggled with this! <3
